what are the effects on the chesapeake bay from snakehead fish?
what ae the effects of snakehead fish on the chesapeake bay?
Snakehead fish are a non-native exotic fish, originally from China. They are voracious predators, and prolific breeders, and can do a great deal of damage to native fish populations in any ponds they are introduced in.
Back several years ago, someone introduced a single male and a single female to one of the ponds in the Chesapeake/Potomac region. They had grown too large for the fish tank he was keeping them in, and didn’t think it would do any harm. By 2003, they captured more than a thousand snakeheads from just one section of one creek.
Snakeheads will eat almost anything that moves and fits in their mouth, and can decimate populations of native fish. There are few if any predators in the region that will eat the snakeheads, meaning that most of their numerous young will survive to adulthood.
To make matters worse, the snakeheads are able to live on land for short periods of time, and are quite capable of moving from one pond to neighbouring ponds and creeks, especially in moist conditions.
There have been several ponds that have been poisoned to try and stop the snakehead menace from spreading, but it may be too late. Numerous ecosystems may be damaged by this introduced fish.
