All the old timers know that Wheaties is one of the best catfish baits. And cheap too. Simply crush the Wheaties and add a little water until it makes a nice paste that can be molded into a ball and placed on the hook. It’s ease of use and proven track record of catching catfish make it a sure bet to be on any old timers list of best catfish baits.
The best way to fish your Wheaties ball is the same as you would fish most other catfish bait. Use a slip sinker with a leader and #6 treble hook. Then cast it out there and let it settle to the bottom. You will soon be hauling the catfish in.
But wait! You can make one of the best catfish baits even better by adding more ingredients to the mix. Some of the more common additives are garlic salt (my favorite), garlic powder and Lowery’s seasoned salt. Those cats seem to love garlic and I tend to add a lot to the Wheaties.
With just the ingredients mentioned above you have the ability to make several different catfish baits. This is important because you should never rely on one bait. The more baits you have, the better chance you have of finding what the catfish are hungry for.
There is only one drawback to Wheaties. While Wheaties is one of the best catfish baits for channel catfish you won’t get many blues and no flatheads. The small blues will go after it but as they get larger they prefer a different diet.
Wheaties are one of the best catfish baits available and with these tips you will be able to spend more time fishing. With catfish the best catfish baits are the ones the catfish want. This can change from day to day or hour to hour so always take three or four baits with you.
